Traveling for photography in Iceland means taking it easy in the middle of the day and grabbing the camera gear late in the afternoon before sunset. This is what we did when we drove from Skógafoss to Brúarfoss and from there to the popular Geysir area. We spent a lot of time at Brúarfoss and at sunset we visited Strokkur and Geysir. Strokkur (Icelandic for “churn”) is a fountain geyser in the geothermal area beside the Hvítá river in Iceland east of Reykjavík. It is one of Iceland’s most famous geysers, erupting about every 4–8 minutes 15 – 20 m high, sometimes up to 40 m high.
Photographing Strokkur means waiting with the camera ready to burst when it erupts. We got colorful sunset for one hour or so. I used the Nikon 14-24 lens without filters. There is no need for gradient filters or any filters. The grads make the top of the geyser too dark and take the color out of the sunset. There are not many opportunities for foreground in the area, but the sunset might make up for that. At least we had a good time. When we left some lovers where dancing at the geyser obviously very happy with each other and the landscape. They danced alone into the sunset since we were the last to leave.
