Around the middle of July last year, we spent two days photographing the Skútafoss waterfall in East Iceland. We had a great time working the scene around the waterfall. Finding new compositions can be tricky, but we had a great time.
Sorry to say this, but there are plans to build houses for tourists and a small power plant in Þorgeirsstaðardalur valley. This means the next few months or years might be the last chance to experience this remote valley and its three beautiful waterfalls untouched.
There are no plans to change the area closest to the waterfall. The plan is to build a tourist service center and a camping site close to the car parking. Considering how things have been changing here in Iceland, I would not be surprised if the landowners started charging admittance fees. This will change the whole experience.
Skútafoss waterfall has been a little-known location until recently. It is one of three waterfalls in Þorgeirsstaðará-river in Þorgeirsstaðardalur valley. The others are Fremstifoss and Innstifoss.
On the east side of the valley is the mountain peak Þorgeirsstaðartindur. Þorgeir is a common Icelandic name, and considering the names in the valley, some Þorgeir has probably lived there. I have no source regarding who Þorgeir was, but according to records from the visitation of bishop Brynjólfur, who visited the valley in 1641, the farm was there at the beginning of the century.
