At Svalbarðseyri on the eastern side of Eyjafjörður, opposite Akureyri, there are two ponds named Svalbarðstjörn and Tungutjörn. Svalbarðseyri is a small coastal community with fewer than 500 inhabitants.
Below the settlement stands a picturesque lighthouse, a symbol of Svalbarðseyri, located just below the village’s core. Svalbarðstjörn is a few meters north of the lighthouse, and about 300 meters further is Tungutjörn. The ponds are similar in size and share the characteristic of hosting abundant birdlife.
